Dr. Zellig's Closet

Although Officer Adams was the first person to have opened the dusty closet in a year, it looked almost the same as it did when it was in use. The owner of the closet mostly used the space to store the numerous projects he had discarded. This owner, Dr. Zellig, would be best described as a mad scientist. If Dr. Zellig were to hear himself being called this, he would vehemently disagree. However, he currently lay in a black body bag, rotting away in a horrific state of decomposition.

Cracked and yellowed plastic bins were stacked haphazardly among wrinkled cardboard boxes, barely held together with multiple layers of duct tape. These boxes contained tall jars of various creatures and body parts preserved in formaldehyde, bleached beyond recognition. Poorly stuffed taxidermy was piling up in a large trash bag. Some bins had photos and magazines, but their neglected state further cemented the idea he was a disturbed hermit- perhaps a once brilliant man who was driven insane by his ceaseless ideas.

There were several tins of canned food, water bottles and flasks of strong liquor. A wooden dresser contained food and supplies for his lab rats. The second drawer had hundreds of small jars of chemicals along with syringes, pocket knives, scalpels, lighters and one unloaded handgun. The bottom drawer was the only place where clothing was kept: socks, underwear, two pairs of slacks and a few t-shirts.

As the forensics team continued to gather evidence, Officer Adams further examined the contents of Dr. Zellig’s closet. Atop a shelf, a formidable safe sat, its door violently forced open, probably by some strong metal-cutting device. As Adams nudged open its door, a small piece of paper fluttered out. Adams picked it up off the dusty, trodden carpet. It read: “RECOVER CONTENTS IN CASE OF SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY. IMMEDIATELY”.
